Does Foraging Activity Affect Foraging Success in the Western Harvester Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)?

چکیده
Foraging behavior has been extensively studied in harvester ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); however, there is little information about the determinants of foraging success. We developed a path analysis model to quantify the functional relationships among the components of foraging at the colony level (onset, duration, number of foragers) and foraging success. Variation in the onset of foraging among colonies directly inßuences the amount of time a colony has available for foraging, and contributes substantially to the total biomass of food retrieved. This difference in foraging effort provides a causal explanation for previously observed differences in colony growth rates.

Influence of temporal fluctuations in seed abundance on the foraging behaviour of harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex spp.) in the central Monte desert, Argentina
The simultaneous study of the temporal dynamics of foraging behaviour, diet and seed abundance is essential to assess the way in which resources affect the behaviour and ecology of harvester ants. Here, we evaluate how fluctuations in grass seed abundance during three consecutive growing seasons influenced the foraging behaviour and diet of the harvester ants Pogonomyrmex rastratus, P. mendozan...
متن کاملThe Relation of Recruitment Rate to Activity Rhythms in the Harvester Ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus (F. Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
The response of a colony of Pogonomyrmex barbatus to bait depends on the activities of the colony at the time bait is offered. Colony activities are temporally patterned within the morning activity period. Both the peak of nest-maintenance work and the onset of the peak of patrolling occur earlier than the peak of foraging. The rate of recruitment to bait is positively correlated with the numbe...
متن کاملPhorid flies, Pseudacteon spp. (Diptera: Phoridae), affect forager size ratios of red imported fire ants Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Texas.
Multiple species of Pseudacteon phorid flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are currently being released throughout the southern United States to aid biological control of red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). It is anticipated that these flies will interfere with S. invicta foraging, allowing native ant assemblages to outcompete S. invicta for available resources. N...
متن کاملECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOR Foraging Activity and Seasonal Food Preference of Linepithema micans (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), a Species Associated With the Spread of Eurhizococcus brasiliensis (Hemiptera: Margarodidae)
Linepithema micans (Forel) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is the main ant species responsible for the spread of Eurhizococcus brasiliensis (Wille) (Hemiptera: Margarodidae), a soil scale that damages vine plants in southern Brazil. The daily foraging activity of L. micans and its seasonal preference for proteinand carbohydrate-based foods were evaluated. The study was carried out in a greenhouse usi...
متن کاملForaging Activity Rhythms of Dinoponera quadriceps (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Its Natural Environment
This study characterizes the foraging activity of the queenless ant Dinoponera quadriceps (Kempf) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in its natural environment by testing the hypotheses that foraging activity presents both daily and seasonal rhythmic variations, and that these rhythms are related to environmental variables. Four colonies of D. quadriceps were observed in an area of secondary Atlantic fo...
